Marketing agency costs, pricing models and how to choose well

    Short answer

A marketing agency plans and runs marketing for businesses that do not want to build the whole team themselves: advertising, search, content, email, social, websites and reporting, or one specialist slice of them. Agencies charge by monthly retainer, by project, by the hour or on performance, and a fee is only fair when you know exactly which work, which people and which results it buys.

What does a marketing agency do?

A marketing agency does the marketing work a business would otherwise need its own team for: it plans campaigns, makes the creative and content, runs channels such as Google and Meta ads, search, email and social, and reports on what the spending returned, either across the whole mix or in a single specialism.

    • Full-service agencies plan and run most channels, usually with a small team assigned to each client.
    • Specialist agencies go deep on one thing: paid search, paid social, SEO, email, PR or design.
    • Creative and branding agencies produce the ideas, the identity and the assets, which others often run.
    • Consultancies and managed services range from one senior person advising to a small team running the work from start to finish.

For a small or mid-sized business the choice usually comes down to one generalist or a few specialists. The specialist questions are answered in more depth on choosing a PPC agency, choosing a Meta ads agency and choosing an email marketing agency.

What the first months with a good agency look like
    1. 1

      Look before proposing

They study your numbers and propose where to start, and why there.

    2. 2

      Get access, check tracking

You grant access to your own accounts, and tracking is fixed before spend goes up.

    3. 3

      Ship the first fix

The change most likely to pay back soonest, not the longest list of ideas.

    4. 4

      Report and adjust

A regular report in revenue or leads, with what changed and what comes next.

    5. 5

      Review the plan

A deeper look at strategy and budget on a set rhythm, usually monthly.

How much does a marketing agency charge?

A marketing agency charges a monthly retainer, a fixed project fee, an hourly or day rate, or a performance fee, and the amount depends on the scope, the seniority of the people and how many channels are involved. Very few surveys of agency fees publish their method; the clearest recent one is from Promethean Research, which surveys digital agency owners mostly in North America and found that 29% of the agencies in its latest survey charged between $175 and $199 an hour.[1]

That hourly figure is the useful one, because most retainers are hours in disguise. At the bottom of that band, a retainer that buys ten hours of work a month costs $1,750, and one that buys a quarter of a person's month costs several times that. Ask how many hours, and whose, any monthly fee represents.[1]

What a month of agency time costs at $175 an hour
    • 10 hours a month$1,750
    • 20 hours a month$3,500
    • 40 hours a month$7,000
    • 80 hours a month$14,000

Arithmetic on Promethean Research's most common hourly band ($175 to $199), not a quote. At $199 an hour each figure is about 14% higher.

In the UK there is no current public survey of agency rates we would stand behind. The IPA, the trade body for advertising agencies, runs a pricing and charge-out rate benchmark every two years, but only senior leaders at its member agencies can see the results. What the IPA has published is that the industry still relies largely on time-and-resource pricing, and that only 27% of agencies believe they are paid a fair price for their work. So on either side of the Atlantic, the first question about a quote is what time it buys.[2][3]

How do you choose a digital marketing agency?

Choose a digital marketing agency by checking six things before you sign: results in businesses like yours that it can explain, your ownership of every account and all the data, the names of the people who will do the work, reporting in revenue or qualified leads, a specific first step drawn from your own numbers, and terms that let you leave if it does not deliver.

The red flags are easier to spot than the green ones:

    • A guaranteed ranking, a guaranteed return or a guaranteed number of leads.
    • Reports built on impressions, reach and followers with no revenue anywhere.
    • Ad accounts or analytics set up in the agency's name instead of yours.
    • A long minimum term before you have seen a single result.
    • A senior team at the pitch that you never hear from again.

Read an agency's results for their context as closely as their size. Take one of Jakub's own, from freelance work before he founded the company: the 4.72x return on ad spend for Mumshandmade was the single best week of a four-month engagement, as Meta reported it, not an average. An agency that tells you that without being asked is one whose other numbers you can trust.[5]

    What we do

We run your marketing for you and make it pay for itself.

    • First comes a free written breakdown: we look at your site and any numbers you choose to share, with no logins, and show you where the money leaks and the first thing we would fix.
    • Then we fix and run the connected commercial journey: the work that earns attention, the pages that turn it into a lead or sale, and the follow-up that creates the next valuable conversion.
    • Everything is actively managed and improved, with a weekly report showing what changed and what it made, and you approve everything before it goes out.
    • Rolling monthly. No lock-in, cancel any time.

    What it is not

    • Not a single-channel agency: we do whatever makes you money next, not ads forever or SEO forever.
    • Not a junior team on a six-month lock-in: you work with Jakub directly, rolling monthly.
    • Not AI left to run on its own: every piece is reviewed by a person and approved by you.

We also build custom automations, such as reporting digests, lead enrichment and routing, and support triage in tools like n8n, Make and Zapier. They are an add-on to the managed service, not a separate offer.

    More questions

Is it cheaper to hire a marketing agency or a marketer?

It depends on how many channels you need run at once. One good hire can cover one or two disciplines well; an agency or managed service can cover several without a salary for each. The full cost of a hire, line by line, is worked through on in-house marketing or an agency.

How long should I give a new marketing agency?

Long enough to cover setup and a few full test cycles, and agree at the start what you will judge it on. If after the first months you cannot see what was changed and what it did to your numbers, the problem is the agency's reporting as much as its results.

Should a marketing agency guarantee results?

Be wary of any that does. Nobody controls Google's rankings or an ad auction, so a guarantee usually rests on a result the agency defines itself, such as traffic or leads of any quality. Ask instead what they will measure, how often you will see it and what they will do when a number moves the wrong way.
