How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT and Google's AI answers

    Short answer

To be recommended by ChatGPT and shown in Google's AI Overviews, make your business easy for the engines to find, read and trust. Let their search crawlers in, get indexed by Google and Bing, publish pages that answer buyers' questions concretely, keep the facts about your company the same everywhere, and earn genuine mentions on sites the engines already cite. No engine sells or guarantees a place.

By Jakub Cambor, founder of AI for Marketing, updated

ChatGPT recommends businesses it can find through its search and can describe with confidence from what it reads, so the work is to be reachable by its search crawler and by the search providers it uses, and to be described concretely and consistently on your own site and elsewhere. OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search, that it ranks results on multiple factors, and that placement is not guaranteed.[1][2]

Two details in OpenAI's own help pages decide where to start. ChatGPT's search crawler is OAI-SearchBot, and a site that blocks it is left out of ChatGPT's search answers; GPTBot is a separate crawler used for model training, so you can refuse training and still be found. And ChatGPT search sometimes rewrites a question into queries it sends to partner search providers, of which the privacy policies it links are Microsoft's and Shopify's. For a service business that makes Bing's index matter as much as Google's.[3][1]

Getting recommended by ChatGPT, in order
    1. 1

      Let the crawlers in

Allow OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot in robots.txt, and check your firewall or CDN is not blocking them.

    2. 2

      Get into Bing

Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit the sitemap and send new or changed pages through IndexNow.

    3. 3

Answer the buyer on one page

For each service, one page that names the job, the tools, the steps, a worked example and the proof.

    4. 4

      Keep your facts straight

The same name, founding date, services, location and founder on your site, LinkedIn and every profile.

    5. 5

      Earn real mentions

Reviews from real clients and a place in the lists and directories the engines already cite for your category.

    6. 6

      Measure it

Ask the same buyer questions every month and watch ChatGPT visits in Google Analytics.

The third step does most of the work. When we audited which pages the engines cite for service questions, the ones they chose spelled out the exact job, named the tools, walked through an example and often gave a price. Pages that described a business in general terms were rarely the ones quoted. Measuring the result is simpler than most people expect, because ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends, so those visits appear in Google Analytics under their own source.[2]

How do you appear in Google's AI Overviews?

You appear in Google's AI Overviews the same way you appear in Google Search: Google says there are no additional requirements, and a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. The overviews are built from Google's own index through its core ranking systems, so the pages that earn a place are the ones already doing well on the related searches Google runs behind the scenes.[9][4]

Google's guidance on what helps is short. Write content that is not a commodity: a first-hand view, real experience and detail that others cannot copy from each other. Organise it with clear headings, support it with good images or video, keep your Merchant Center and Business Profile details current, and make sure the page is crawlable, fast and not duplicated elsewhere on the site. Google also notes that AI Overviews only appear when they add something to the results, so many searches never show one.[4][9]

Just as useful is Google's list of things you can ignore for its search: llms.txt and other special AI files, breaking content into tiny chunks, rewriting pages just for AI, chasing inauthentic mentions, and special structured data. Structured data still earns rich results, so keep it, but Google says no schema is needed for AI features.[4]

Search Console is where to see the result: Google counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the Performance report under the Web search type, and its guide points to a Generative AI performance report for AI features. Google also warns that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems, whatever the tool claims.[9][4]

How is AI SEO different from traditional SEO?

AI SEO is mostly traditional SEO with a different scoreboard. Google calls optimising for its AI features simply SEO, and Bing says its Copilot answers rest on the same crawling, indexing and ranking as its search results. What changes is what you win, a mention or a citation inside an answer rather than a position in a list, how many engines you need to watch, and how much the facts about your company elsewhere on the web count.[4][5]

Bing now shows the AI side directly: its AI Performance report in Webmaster Tools counts how often your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries, which pages, and the phrases the AI searched with when it found them. Bing also recommends IndexNow so AI answers draw on the current version of a page.[11]

Our own measurement works the way a buyer searches. We keep a fixed set of real buyer questions, chosen by search volume in the UK and the US, and ask every one of them each month on six engines: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. Each answer is scored for whether the business is named, whether its site is cited and who is recommended instead. The questions stay fixed, so one month compares with the next, and because a single run can differ from the next, we read the trend rather than any one answer.

Which should you invest in? The same work serves both, so the question is really one of emphasis: pages that answer buyers concretely, a technically sound site that Google and Bing both index, and facts about you that agree everywhere. Our AI SEO service does that work as part of our one managed marketing service, and our comparison of AI SEO and traditional SEO goes further into the differences. The search volumes below show where attention is: people look up AI Overviews far more than they ask how to rank in ChatGPT.

    What we do

We run your marketing for you and make it pay for itself.

    • First comes a free written breakdown: we look at your site and any numbers you choose to share, with no logins, and show you where the money leaks and the first thing we would fix.
    • Then we fix and run the connected commercial journey: the work that earns attention, the pages that turn it into a lead or sale, and the follow-up that creates the next valuable conversion.
    • Everything is actively managed and improved, with a weekly report showing what changed and what it made, and you approve everything before it goes out.
    • Rolling monthly. No lock-in, cancel any time.

    What it is not

    • Not a single-channel agency: we do whatever makes you money next, not ads forever or SEO forever.
    • Not a junior team on a six-month lock-in: you work with Jakub directly, rolling monthly.
    • Not AI left to run on its own: every piece is reviewed by a person and approved by you.

We also build custom automations, such as reporting digests, lead enrichment and routing, and support triage in tools like n8n, Make and Zapier. They are an add-on to the managed service, not a separate offer.

    More questions

Can you pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

Not in its search answers. OpenAI says placement in ChatGPT search is not guaranteed, and its help pages describe no paid route into it. What earns a place is being crawlable, indexed and clearly the right answer to the question.[1][3]

    Should we block GPTBot?

That is a choice about training, not about search. GPTBot collects content that may be used to train OpenAI's models; OAI-SearchBot is what puts you in ChatGPT's search answers. You can disallow the first and allow the second, and many businesses do.[3]

How long before changes show up in AI answers?

It depends on the engine re-reading your pages. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about a day to reach its search, Perplexity says up to a day for its crawlers, and Google says recrawling can take from several days to several months. Sending changed pages through IndexNow speeds up Bing.[3][6][9][8]
