The short answer
The original title of this article claimed that agents beat workflows. That is not true in general, so we have narrowed it. The fair statement is that each wins on different kinds of work.
- • Workflows win when the steps are known in advance: move this form to the CRM, tag it, notify the owner, add to a sequence. They are predictable, cheap per run and easy to test.
- • Agents win when each case needs different steps: research an unfamiliar company, decide which contacts matter, judge whether a lead fits. The model chooses what to do, at higher cost per run and with more oversight needed.
Anthropic draws the same line in its guidance for builders: workflows follow predefined code paths; agents direct their own process and tool use. It recommends the simplest option that works, and says agentic systems trade cost and latency for better performance on tasks that need it.
n8n and Relevance AI sit on opposite sides of that line by design, though each now reaches into the other's territory.
What each tool is
n8n is a workflow automation platform you can self host or use in n8n's cloud. You build flows of nodes, including an AI Agent node that connects a chat model to tools and lets the model decide which tools to call. It documents an option to require human approval before the agent runs specific tools. It is distributed under n8n's Sustainable Use Licence: free for your own internal business use, restricted if you resell n8n itself.
Relevance AI is a low code platform for building AI agents. Agents are given tools (actions such as searching the web, updating a CRM, sending a Slack message) and knowledge, and can be combined into teams it calls workforces, with approvals placed on a visual canvas. It is a hosted product.
Side by side
n8n and Relevance AI compared
| Criterion | n8n | Relevance AI |
|---|---|---|
| Design centre | Workflow first: fixed paths, with agent steps where needed | Agent first: agents and teams of agents, with tools and knowledge |
| Best at | Reliable, repeatable movement of data between systems | Variable research, qualification and enrichment tasks |
| Hosting | Self hosted or n8n cloud | Vendor hosted |
| Data control | High when self hosted: data stays on your infrastructure | Data processed on the vendor's platform; check its terms |
| Skills to build well | Technical comfort; developers get the most from it | Designed for non developers; prompt and process design still needed |
| Human approval | Documented option to require approval before specific agent tools run | Approvals can be placed in workforce flows |
| Cost pattern | Infrastructure or cloud plan; self hosting is free under the licence for internal use | Subscription and usage based; pricing varies by plan and changes often, so check the vendor's pricing page |
| Main risk | Someone must maintain the server and the flows | Agent behaviour varies by case, so testing and review matter more |
Which jobs suit which
Marketing jobs by best fit
| Job | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sending new form leads to the CRM and notifying sales | n8n (workflow) | Same steps every time; predictability and low cost per run matter |
| Researching an inbound lead's company and role before it reaches the CRM | Relevance AI (agent), inside a workflow | Each lead needs different searches and judgement |
| Building a daily list of contacts at target companies | Agent for the research, workflow for scheduling and CRM | Mixed: the choice of titles and validation vary; the schedule and delivery do not |
| Weekly performance report from ad platforms | n8n (workflow), with an AI step to summarise | Data pulls are fixed; only the summary needs a model |
| Answering varied questions from prospects in chat | Agent platform | Open ended inputs; the model must choose what to look up |
The pattern that holds across these jobs: a fixed spine with an agent only at the step that needs judgement.
What AfM's case records show
AfM's published automation records use exactly that mixed design, which is also a disclosure: we build with Relevance AI, and AfM's founder was issued Relevance AI's partner certification in April 2025 (as listed on Jakub's Upwork profile when last captured, 14 August 2026), so weigh this section with that in mind. In the Allegiance Industries prospecting system, built in 2026, Make.com (a workflow tool comparable to n8n in role) runs the daily schedule, retries and logging, while a Relevance AI agent decides which job titles to search for each company, queries the data provider and validates the results. In the inbound lead enrichment system, work Jakub delivered in 2025 before founding AfM, a webhook starts a fixed pipeline and a Relevance AI agent performs the research step, with leads it cannot enrich confidently flagged for manual review.
Neither build is agent only or workflow only. The agent does the part a fixed path cannot, and the workflow keeps the rest predictable and auditable.
How to choose
- • Write the job's steps down. If you can, and they rarely change, start with a workflow tool.
- • Mark the steps that need judgement on messy inputs. Those are agent candidates.
- • Decide on hosting. If data must stay on your infrastructure and you have the skills, n8n self hosted is the natural choice. If you want nothing to maintain, a hosted agent platform is simpler.
- • Check who will build it. Relevance AI is designed for non developers, so a marketing operator is likely to get a first agent working sooner there; a technical team will get more control from n8n.
- • Trial on ten real cases and compare cost per run and share of usable outputs.
If you are weighing several tools rather than two, see the wider AI marketing tools comparison. If you would rather have the work run for you, AfM provides a managed service rather than handing over a built system to operate.
FAQ
Can n8n build AI agents?
Yes. Its AI Agent node connects a chat model to tools and lets the model decide which to call. It is well suited to agent steps inside larger workflows, and less focused on agent teams than an agent first platform.
Can Relevance AI replace my automation tool?
For some processes, yes, but using an agent for fixed, repeatable steps costs more per run and is less predictable than a workflow. Many builds use both: a workflow for the fixed path and an agent for the judgement step.
Is n8n free?
Self hosting for your own internal business use is free under its Sustainable Use Licence, though you pay for the server and your time. n8n also sells a hosted cloud service and enterprise licences.
Why did AfM use Make.com rather than n8n in its case records?
The case records describe what was built and do not record why Make.com was chosen, so we will not invent a reason. Make.com and n8n play the same workflow role; in any build the sensible choice depends on the tools the business already runs and its hosting needs.
