The short answer
The most useful free marketing tools are not the flashiest AI apps. They are the free tools the big platforms give you to measure and research, plus one free AI assistant to turn that information into drafts and summaries. Used together they cover more ground than many paid stacks, provided someone spends an hour a week on them.
A note on the title: we narrowed it from "that actually work" because we have not run a documented test of these tools. What follows is a description of what each tool is for, what is free, and what the catch is, from each provider's own documentation.
The free stack at a glance
Free tools by job, with the catch
| Tool | Job it does | What is free | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Shows which searches bring people to your site: clicks, impressions, click through rate and average position | The whole product | Not AI, and only covers Google Search; you still have to interpret it |
| Google Analytics 4 generated insights | Summarises notable changes in your analytics data in plain language | Included in standard GA4 | Only as good as your tracking and consent setup |
| Google Keyword Planner | Keyword ideas and historical search volume from Google Ads | Free to use inside a Google Ads account | Needs an Ads account set up; volumes are shown in ranges unless you advertise |
| Meta Ad Library | See the ads any Facebook or Instagram page is running | Public and free | Shows the creative, not the results or spend of commercial ads |
| Google Ads Transparency Center | See ads an advertiser has run on Search, YouTube and Display | Public and free | No performance data; coverage by format varies |
| ChatGPT or Claude free tiers | Drafting, summarising, restructuring notes, first pass analysis | Everyday use with limits on some tools | Usage caps, and check the data and training settings before pasting customer data |
| Canva free plan | Branded graphics and simple AI image editing | A free plan exists; check Canva's pricing page for which editor and AI features it includes | Which AI features and how much AI use the free plan allows is set on Canva's pricing page, and changes |
| n8n self hosted | Automating handoffs between tools, including AI steps | Free for internal business use under its licence | You need a server and the skills to run and secure it |
| Google Meridian | Open source marketing mix modelling across channels | Free and open source | Needs a data scientist and a long, clean history of spend and sales data |
What each tool is actually good for
Measurement first: Search Console and GA4
Search Console's performance report tells you which queries show your pages, how often people click, and your average position. For a small business this is the single most useful free marketing data source, because it shows real demand in the words customers use. Export the queries every month and ask a free AI assistant to group them by intent; you get a content plan built from evidence.
GA4's generated insights summarise unusual changes, such as a sudden drop in conversions, in plain language at the top of reports. They save you from staring at charts, but they cannot fix broken tracking. If your consent banner or tags are wrong, the insight will describe the wrong numbers confidently.
Research: Keyword Planner and the ad libraries
Keyword Planner is Google's free keyword research tool inside Google Ads. You need an account, but you do not need to be spending to use it. Treat its volumes as directional.
The Meta Ad Library and Google Ads Transparency Center are two of the most useful free competitor tools available. In an hour you can see the ads a competitor is running, the angles they test and how long each ad has been live. An ad that has run for months is often a sign it is working for them, though you cannot see its results, and some ads are simply left running. The AI competitor analysis guide shows how to turn that into a one page brief.
Production: a free assistant and Canva
A free tier of ChatGPT or Claude is enough to draft emails, rework page copy and summarise research, if you keep a written brief about your business to paste in each time. Two cautions. First, free tiers have usage limits on heavier features. Second, read the data controls: consumer plans may use conversations to improve models unless you change the setting, so do not paste customer personal data into them.
Canva offers a free plan alongside paid ones. Before you build a routine around its AI features, check Canva's pricing page for which of them the free plan includes and how much use it allows, because that is what changes. If you find the free plan's AI limits getting in the way every week, that is a sign the paid plan would pay for itself; if not, stay free.
Automation: n8n, for the technically confident
n8n is free to self host for your own internal business use under its Sustainable Use Licence. That makes it the strongest free option on this list for serious automation, but the real cost is a server, updates and security. If nobody in the business is comfortable with that, a paid hosted tool is cheaper in practice.
Modelling: Meridian, for the data rich
Google's Meridian is an open source marketing mix model. It is powerful and free, and it is not for most small businesses: it needs historical data across channels and someone who understands Bayesian modelling. Mention it to an analyst, not to a sole trader.
A one week setup plan using only free tools
- • Day 1: verify your site in Search Console and check GA4 is receiving key events (enquiries, purchases).
- • Day 2: export the last three months of Search Console queries. Ask a free AI assistant to group them into themes and flag queries where you rank on page two.
- • Day 3: spend one hour in the Meta Ad Library and Google Ads Transparency Center on three competitors. Note their offers, hooks and longest running ads.
- • Day 4: write a one page brief about your business: audience, offer, proof, words you never use. Save it for every AI session.
- • Day 5: use the brief to draft one page improvement for a page two query and two ad angles you have not tried.
- • Weekly after that: 30 minutes checking GA4 insights and Search Console, and one improvement shipped.
When free stops being free
The free stack costs time instead of money. A reasonable rule: when the weekly hour turns into a weekly day, or when you are making decisions on numbers you are not sure you trust, it is time to pay for either better tools or help. The selection guide covers the first route. AfM's managed service is one version of the second: we run the work, and you review and decide.
FAQ
Is Google Keyword Planner really free?
Yes, it is free inside a Google Ads account and you do not have to run ads to open it. Accounts that are not spending tend to see search volumes as broad ranges rather than exact figures.
Can I use a free AI assistant with customer data?
Avoid it on consumer free tiers. Check the provider's data and training settings, and remember that UK GDPR applies to personal data. Use anonymised or aggregated data for analysis instead.
What is the best free tool for competitor research?
The Meta Ad Library and Google Ads Transparency Center, because they show real ads competitors are running. Pair them with a free assistant to summarise angles and offers across what you find.
Do free tools work for B2B as well as ecommerce?
Yes. Search Console and the ad libraries are equally useful for B2B. For B2B, add LinkedIn's own campaign reporting if you advertise there, and keep your CRM as the source of truth for lead quality.
