    How big the shift is

A zero-click search ends without the searcher visiting a website: they get the answer in the results, refine the query or leave. It is not new, and it is not small.

    • • Most searches already ended without a click before AI Overviews were widespread. SparkToro's 2024 study, using Datos clickstream data, estimated that 58.5% of Google searches in the US and 59.7% in the EU ended with no click.
    • • AI summaries reduce clicks further. Pew Research Center tracked the browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025: when a Google results page included an AI summary, users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits, against 15% when there was no summary. Clicks on the links inside the summary happened on 1% of visits.
    • • UK users see them often. Ofcom's Online Nation 2025 report found that around 30% of searches showed AI overviews and that 53% of UK adults said they often see them.

Google's position is that it still sends billions of clicks to the web every day and that clicks from its AI experiences are higher quality. Take both views together: fewer clicks on some queries, and the visitors who do arrive often know more about what they want.

The strategy: three types of query

Zero-click behaviour is not spread evenly. It depends on what the searcher needs.

Three query types and what to do about each

    Classify your own queries

    1. • In Search Console, export the top 100 to 500 queries for the last three months.
    2. • Tag each query with one type. An AI tool can do a first pass if you give it the three definitions and five examples of each; check its tags on a sample, because it will misjudge queries that are specific to your industry.
    3. • Add up impressions and clicks by type.

Often the fall in clicks sits mostly on answer-and-leave queries, which were never likely to convert; check whether yours does. If clicks are falling on need-more queries, that is the problem to fix.

    Tactics by type

Answer and leave: be the name in the answer

You will not win many clicks here, so do not spend heavily. Answer the question accurately and briefly on the pages where it naturally belongs, and make sure your brand, product names and key facts are written consistently across your site and profiles. The value is being seen as the source when someone later searches for a provider.

Need more: give a reason to click

Google's guidance for performing well in its AI experiences emphasises unique, satisfying content and first-hand experience, and warns against commodity content. For need-more queries, that means building what a summary can point to but not replace:

    • • Interactive tools: calculators, configurators, checklists that score the reader's situation.
    • • Original data: your own survey, pricing index, benchmark or anonymised aggregate.
    • • Worked examples with real numbers and assumptions shown.
    • • Opinions with reasons: "we would not recommend X for businesses under 20 staff, because..."

A page like this can be cited in an AI answer and still earn the click, because the summary cannot run the calculator for the reader.

Act now: win the action wherever it happens

For local and transactional searches, the conversion often happens on Google: a call from the Business Profile, directions, a booking. Measure those actions in your Business Profile performance data, not only website visits. The article on local SEO strategies with AI covers the profile in detail.

    Should you block AI Overviews?

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode respect Search's preview controls: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex. Using them limits how your content appears in AI features, but also in ordinary snippets, which can reduce visibility and clicks in classic results. For most businesses the trade-off is poor; consider it only for content whose value is destroyed by being summarised, and test on a small set of pages first.

    Measure visibility, not just visits

Clicks alone now understate what search does for you. Track four things monthly:

    1. • Clicks and conversions by query type, from your classification.
    2. • AI feature impressions, from Search Console's generative AI performance report, which Google says reached all sites on 31 August 2026.
    3. • Branded search volume: searches for your name, a sign that visibility without clicks is building recall.
    4. • On-Google actions for local businesses: calls, direction requests and bookings from your Business Profile.

If AI impressions and branded searches rise while clicks on answer-and-leave queries fall, your strategy is working as intended.

    FAQ

Is zero-click search the same as AI Overviews?

No. Zero-click searches were already common before AI Overviews, from featured snippets, knowledge panels and simple answers. AI Overviews are one more reason a search can end without a click.

Should I stop writing informational content?

Stop writing pages whose only value is a fact a summary can state. Keep writing informational content that helps someone make a decision, especially with tools, data or worked examples a summary cannot replace.

Are UK figures different from US figures?

Most click studies use US data. Ofcom's 2025 report is the clearest UK source on exposure: around 30% of searches showed AI overviews and 53% of adults said they see them often. It does not measure clicks directly.

How can I tell if a query type is losing clicks?

Compare the same queries across two equal periods in Search Console. If impressions hold while clicks and click-through rate fall, the answer is increasingly being satisfied in the results.
